Beautifully occupies the seemingly unexplored and passed over space that lies between our increasingly dystopian present and the shining grittiness of a cyberpunk future. Every story stands on their lonesome ,and yet, are clearly integrated into a greater gestalt of shared humanity more than any installed chrome.

“The Beast of Longyearbyen” is a personal favorite.

So much of a favorite that I had mind to composite a song for it. As Gévaudan, so Longyearbyen.

Beast of Longyearbyen

(Adapted from and to the cadence of the rousing “Beast of Gévaudan” by Powerwolf)

Beast of Longyearbyen, feared no mod and feared no gun
Roused from ocean depths, abyssal creature

Beast of Longyearbyen, for nature’s wrath to come
Came to sanction the mass and the poachers

Hunted by hundreds, and never to be caught
Ascent to hunger, strike horror, and take ’em all below

To the Corpo on the run, came the Beast of Longyearbyen
Dominator, a hunter, half myth and half nova

To the sailor come undone, came the Beast of Longyearbyen
Asserter, a warder, all lethal, lithe and lean

Beast of Longyearbyen

Beast of Longyearbyen, farmed salmon will succumb
Meant to feast on the greed of exploiters

Beast of Longyearbyen, upwell Tiamat rerun
Tear the mass off deepening coastlines

Hunted by hundreds, all tempted to be sought
Spear through like riptide, remind of primal fears

To the Corpo on the run, came the Beast of Longyearbyen
Dominator, a hunter, half myth and half nova

To the sailor come undone, came the Beast of Longyearbyen
Asserter, a warder, all lethal, lithe and lean

Beast of Longyearbyen

In the depths no man can gun down the Beast of Longyearbyen
No escape from the fate of a denier sunk in hubris

When all accounts paid and done, tame the seas of Longyearbyen
And the haunt of the beast will remain

To the Corpo on the run, came the Beast of Longyearbyen
Dominator, a hunter, half myth and half nova

To the sailor come undone, came the Beast of Longyearbyen
Asserter, a warder, all lethal, lithe and lean
